A significant problem that faces the geologist in the sampling of alluvial deposits, whether they contain precious metals or gemstones is the ability to obtain meaningful and accurate results. The most efficient method of assessing deep alluvial deposits remains that of drilling however the assessment of shallow deposits, that is, deposits which do not exceed 6 to 7 meters in depth remains a problem. Coarse bouldery alluvials prove the most difficult to sample and assess. Conventional pit excavation, channel sampling, dishing of channel samples and assaying of the resulting concentrates are not considered reliable and accurate testing techniques for coarse alluvial deposits.

Bulk sampling has long been a favored technique in that it allows a meaningful sample volume to be treated and provides a result in terms of a measurable “recovered” quantity of metal or gemstones per cubic meter of the alluvial being tested. The size of bulk testing plants has also created concerns within many governmental mining departments; opinions vary as to whether some of the larger plants constitute bulk testing units or trial mining units. The small Savana units overcome these concerns and offer the alluvial geologist a number of very attractive features.

The alluvial plants also have great application for the small scale miner. Although the treatment rates are comparable with small dredges the components allow more thorough cleaning and screening of the alluvium and through use of Pan-American pulsating jigs a higher recovery rate than a dredge sluice. The use of jigs allows for the recovery of exceedingly fine material which is usually lost in the rush of water observed in most sluicing operations.

The Savana Mining Equipment units allow the small scale operator greater flexibility; water settings and jig stroke can be easily altered as can the slope of the small trommel, feed rate and wash water volume.

The units offered by Savana Mining Equipment are well suited to small scale mining applications, for use by recreational miners, village co-operatives and landowner groups particularly in areas where water availability can be a seasonal problem. The Units are ideal for use by geologists and engineers in the testing of shallow alluvial deposits containing either precious metals or gemstones particularly where transportation to isolated areas is a problem.
